The perpetrator was subdued after some of the 40 wedding attendees tackled him to the ground. He was not seriously injured, and guests sustained minor injuries in the struggle.
Authorities responded to the New England Pentecostal Church in Pelham at 10:12 a.m. EST. Pelham is approximately 40 miles south of Concord, the state’s capital.
Responding officers placed the suspect under arrest and rendered medical aid to the wounded individuals. The two injured were then transported to area hospitals by Pelham Fire Department ambulances.
In a statement, Lowell General Hospital said it had received one patient from the shooting and that person had been transferred to a hospital in Boston. It said it could not disclose any other details.
A memorial service for Luis Garcia was set to be held at the church at noon.
Garcia’s obituary said he was a minister at the church. The 60-year-old was murdered earlier this month. A man has been charged with his death and is serving time in jail.
Pelham Police Chief Joseph Roark told reporters in a news conference that New Hampshire State Police and representatives from the state Attorney General’s Office are on the scene.
The motive of the incident is still under investigation, but Roarke told reporters this was not a random act.
This is “still a very active investigation,” he said.
The criminal investigation of this matter has been turned over to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime investigators.
More details will be released by the attorney general’s office at a later time.
